Review: Erasmus+ Training Course - "From Earth to Art: Learn How to Creatively Advocate for Our Planet"
July 27, 2024
bis August 7, 2024

The Erasmus+ training course „From Earth to Art: Learn how to creatively advocate for our planet,“ held from the 27th of July to the 7th of August 2024 in Ommen, Netherlands, brought together 22 youth workers, artists, and activists from across Europe. Hosted by the Olde Vechte Foundation, the course was designed to empower participants to use their artistic talents and creative energy to advocate for environmental sustainability.

The training started with team-building activities that fostered a sense of community among the participants. This foundation of trust and collaboration was crucial as the group embarked on a series of immersive workshops and creative projects throughout the course. One of the highlights was the upcycling sculpture workshop, where participants explored how human interaction with the planet can be depicted through recycled materials.

Participants engaged in several workshops, such as a thought-provoking game on climate crisis and cooperation, a roleplay exercise on climate injustice, which allowed them to delve into the complex social and environmental dynamics at play in today’s world. The workshop provided a safe space for participants to reflect on these issues and to consider policies that could change society for the common good.

Creativity was further unleashed in a stop-motion video session, where participants worked in small groups and earned to convey powerful messages through visual storytelling. The trash fashion show was another innovative activity that demonstrated how discarded materials could be reimagined into something beautiful, challenging perceptions of waste and consumerism and denunciating its social/ecological impact.

A particularly meaningful experience was the time spent reconnecting with nature. The group engaged in Land Art in the Sahara, a sandy area nestled within the forests near Ommen. This activity allowed participants to create art in harmony with the natural landscape, fostering a deep connection with the environment and freely expressing themselves through natural materials.

One of the standout moments of the course was the protest song workshop led by Cihiro, a Dutch-Bolivian activist for decolonization and climate justice. Her guidance inspired participants to channel their emotions and beliefs into music, creating powerful anthems for change. The course also included a day trip to Amsterdam, where participants visited Framer Framed, an art gallery dedicated to promoting socio-ecological topics, and Mediamatic, a creative hub that merges innovation, art, and sustainability.

The final days of the course were dedicated to performance art, culminating in a community-focused performance that brought together all the skills and insights gained throughout the training. This collaborative effort symbolized the strength and unity of the group and their shared commitment to advocating for the planet.

The „From Earth to Art“ training course was a transformative experience, enriched by the active participation and contributions of everyone involved. The creativity, passion, and dedication of the participants made this a truly impactful journey, one that will continue to resonate as they carry the lessons learned back to their communities.

Special thanks to the trainer Katrina Munder for designing and facilitating such a great program, to the Olde Vechte Foundation for hosting this inspiring event, to our cook Stella for the amazing vegan food, and to all the local and international contributors who made it possible. The course concluded on a high note, leaving a lasting impression on all who took part.
